Levi Strauss and Jacob W. Davis, when designing durable denim jeans for farmers and miners, probably did not think that jeans would become the most common wardrobe piece in the world. It is estimated that 6 billion pairs of jeans are produced every year all around the world. Zengcheng in Guangzhou is an important region of jeans production in China. If you are thinking about importing jeans from Zengcheng, you should consider visiting its wholesale center, and if you are interested in the product of a certain manufacturer, pay a visit to his factory. It is also advantageous to combine visits with participation in trade fairs, for example, the famous Canton Fair. Keep in mind that this type of visit should not overlap with the most important Chinese holidays, which usually don’t fall on the same date every year.
Zengcheng is a district under the capital of Guangdong Province – Guangzhou. This area was an important commercial center during the reign of the Eastern Han Dynasty (around 200 AD). Zengcheng is particularly known for its delicious lychee fruit and a thriving National Economic and Technological Development Zone.
Zengcheng – a jeans production region in China
In Xintang, located in Zengcheng, there is one of the four largest jeans production centers in China, with over 10,000 enterprises and companies related to the production of this type of pants. It is estimated that the annual production of over 260 million pairs of jeans accounts for 60% of total Chinese jeans production. 40% of the jeans sold in the United States come from there. Xintang deserves its name as the “jeans capital of the world”.
Xintang International Jean City is the first center in China of such type. At around 10,000 square meters, over 3,000 exhibitors offer their products, mainly jeans. The products are of medium quality at low prices. Although the most fashionable jeans styles change from season to season, there are always classic models available. The complex includes shopping, research and development, information, training, logistics and rest areas.

How to get to Zengcheng (Guangzhou)?
The easiest way to get to Guangzhou is to go by airplane – Guangzhou Baiyun Airport has an extensive route network, offering both domestic and international air service. From the airport to Zengcheng you can get by bus. The journey lasts an hour and a half and costs about 50 RMB.
From more distant cities of China, aside from the airplane, one can also get to Guangzhou by train – it takes 7 hours from Shanghai, 8 hours from Beijing, and 4 hours from Nanning.
You can get to Zengcheng from the center of Guangzhou by bus from 7 AM to 9 PM. For example, a journey from the Tianhe bus station takes about an hour and a half and costs 16 RMB.
How to get around Zengcheng (Guangzhou)?
We recommended purchasing a prepaid public transport card Lingnan Pass – Yang Cheng Tong. It costs 70 RMB (including 20 RMB as a deposit) and can be used on subways, buses, some taxis, and even vending machines and telephone booths. It is available at metro stations and in 7-Eleven stores.
Guangzhou has an extensive subway system. The stations are described and announced in Chinese and English. The fare ranges from 2 to 19 RMB (using Lingnan Pass is more economical). Zengcheng operates two lines: 13 and 21.
Most taxi drivers have poor English, so we recommended preparing information about the destination in Chinese characters. Taxi fare starts at 10 RMB for the first 2.3 km, then it is 2.6 RMB for each kilometer.
The cost of a bus ticket is a minimum of 1 RMB. Stops are announced in Mandarin, Cantonese, and sometimes in English. Buses run from 6 AM to 10 PM; night buses are also available (fare from 3 RMB).
US duty rates for jeans
Regardless of what goods are imported from China, the importer should remember to pay the applicable duty. The duty rates of denim pants are around 10-20%. For example, the duty rate of men’s and boys’ blue denim (6203.32.20) is 9.4%. Detailed duty and more information on importing those types of goods can be found here. In matters of the US-China trade war, the duties on jeans are raised by an additional 7.5%.
